Word by word

The line, explained

Picture the scene: a phone pressed to an ear, rain on a window, and a voice that does not say hello. 너 지금 어디야? — 'where are you right now?' This is one of the most common lines in Korean drama, and it teaches two things at once: the question word 어디 (where), and the fact that Korean questions do not rearrange the sentence the way English does. You just drop the question word into place and lift your voice.

너 is the casual 'you'. Korean usually leaves the subject out when it is obvious, so a line that begins with 너 is making a point — the speaker is pinning the listener down. 지금 means 'now' or 'right now', and like all time words it comes early, before the thing being asked. Together 너 지금 is already a little urgent: you, right now.

어디 is 'where'. Here is what makes Korean questions easy: the question word sits exactly where the answer would. If the answer is 집이야 (I'm at home), the question is 어디야 — same slot, same ending. Nothing moves. English has to flip 'you are where' into 'where are you'; Korean leaves it alone. 야 is the casual form of 'is', the thing you attach to a noun to make a sentence, and the rising tone turns the whole phrase into a question.

The same template gives you the other essential question words. 뭐야? is 'what is it?', from 뭐 (what) plus 야. 누구야? is 'who is it?'. 언제야? is 'when is it?'. In every case you can swap in the answer and the sentence still works: 이게 뭐야? (what is this?) → 이게 선물이야 (this is a present). Make any of them polite by changing 야 to 예요: 어디예요?, 뭐예요?

The swap today changes who is being asked, and it shows how much Korean packs into forms of address. 오빠 지금 어디야? is a girl calling an older boy she is close to, and dramas treat it as a love line. 엄마 지금 어디야? is a kid at the school gate. 우리 지금 어디야? (where are we right now?) is two people lost on a road trip — or, in a drama, a question about the relationship itself.

Grammar · 어디야? / 뭐야?

question words + 야

Korean asks 'where' and 'what' by putting the question word where the answer would go and adding 야, the casual form of 'is'. 어디야? (where is it / where are you?), 뭐야? (what is it?). Word order does not change. 누구야? (who is it?), 언제야? (when is it?) work the same way. Polite: 어디예요?, 뭐예요?

  • 여기 어디야?Where is this place?
  • 이게 뭐야?What is this?
  • 저 사람 누구야?Who is that person?

Why it hits

너 지금 어디야? is the drama phone call — someone has run out into the rain, and the other person is already in a taxi. In real life it is the text you get from a friend who is waiting at the restaurant. Either way, the 지금 (right now) is what makes it sound like it cannot wait.
