이번 무대 완전 짱이야

Example line · fan reaction after a live stage
Word by word
The line, explained
The comeback stage just aired. The comments are flooding in, and half of them say some version of this: 이번 무대 완전 짱이야! This performance is totally the best! 짱 is one of the oldest and friendliest pieces of Korean slang. It has been around for decades, it never sounds rude, and it is so simple that you can use it today with a thumbs-up and a grin.
이번 means this time or this one, the current one in a series. Fans use it for comebacks, albums and episodes: 이번 앨범 (this album), 이번 주 (this week). 무대 means stage, but in K-pop it means a performance, each live show on a music program. Fans rank 무대 the way sports fans rank games, and a legendary one gets talked about for years.
완전 literally means complete or perfect, but in casual speech it has become totally. Put it in front of almost anything to turn it up: 완전 좋아 (totally love it), 완전 피곤해 (totally exhausted). It is the Korean equivalent of 'so' or 'literally' in young people's English, and you will hear it constantly in variety shows and fan live streams.
짱 means the best, or the boss of something. It is a noun, so to say something is the best you add the casual 'is' ending. Because 짱 ends in a consonant, it takes 이야, giving 짱이야. On its own, 짱! is a complete reaction. It can also attach to other words: 얼짱 is someone with the best face, 몸짱 someone with the best body, and 짱 귀여워 means super cute.
Since 짱 is a little retro, it can sound cheerful and wholesome rather than edgy, which is why idols and brands both use it freely. The tense double ㅉ at the start gives it punch: jjang, like a cymbal. Try swapping what you are praising: 이번 노래 완전 짱이야 is about the song, and 이번 뮤비 완전 짱이야 means this music video is totally the best.
Grammar · 짱 + 이야 / 짱이다
using 짱 in a sentence
짱 is a noun meaning the best or the boss, so it takes the casual 'is' ending: 짱이야 (it's the best), or 짱이다 in exclamations. On its own, 짱! is a full reaction, often with a thumbs-up. It also attaches in front of words, like 짱 귀여워 (super cute), and after them to name the top person: 얼짱 (best face), 몸짱 (best body).
- 너 진짜 짱이야!You're seriously the best!
- 이 노래 짱!This song's awesome!
- 오늘 날씨 짱 좋아.The weather's super nice today.
Why it hits
짱 has been around since the 1990s and never really went out of style. You'll see it in comment sections after every comeback stage, on cafe menus, and in idols' own captions with a thumbs-up emoji.
