밥 먹은 후에 얘기하자
bap meo-geun hu-e yae-gi-ha-ja
“Let's talk after we eat”
Example line · Korean family drama, tense dinner table
Word by word
The line, explained
Someone has just dropped a bombshell at the dinner table. Chopsticks freeze. Then Dad says, without looking up, 밥 먹은 후에 얘기하자, 'let's talk after we eat'. It is a classic family-drama move, and it shows you the pattern for 'after …ing': -(으)ㄴ 후에. Where -기 전에 sets a deadline, -(으)ㄴ 후에 sets an order: first this, then that. And in Korean homes, food always comes first.
밥 literally means cooked rice, but in daily speech it means a meal of any kind. 밥 먹었어? (have you eaten?) is even a common greeting. Here 밥 is the thing being eaten; the object marker 을 is dropped, as it usually is in casual speech. 먹은 comes from 먹다, to eat. The stem 먹 ends in a consonant, so it takes -은, and the ㄱ links forward: meo-geun.
That -은 is the key. It is the same ending that turns a verb into a past description, like 먹은 밥, rice that was eaten. Put 후에, 'after', behind it, and you get 'after eating'. For stems ending in a vowel, use just -ㄴ, which slides under the last syllable: 끝나다 → 끝난 후에, 보다 → 본 후에, 하다 → 한 후에. You can also say 다음에 instead of 후에. It means the same thing and sounds slightly more casual.
얘기하자 means 'let's talk'. 얘기 is a spoken form of 이야기, story or talk, and 얘기하다 is to talk or have a conversation. The ending -자 turns any verb into a casual 'let's': 가자, let's go; 먹자, let's eat. In this line it is not really a suggestion. Dad is closing the subject, politely but firmly, until the plates are empty.
Say it the way a tired parent would: bap meo-geun hu-e, flat and calm, then yae-gi-ha-ja, final. Now change the condition: 일 끝난 후에 얘기하자, let's talk after work; 술 깬 후에 얘기하자, let's talk once you've sobered up; 네가 진정한 후에 얘기하자, let's talk after you calm down. Each one is a polite way of saying 'not now', which may be the most useful thing a sentence can do.
Grammar · -(으)ㄴ 후에
“After …ing”
Add -은 to a stem ending in a consonant, or -ㄴ to a stem ending in a vowel, then 후에 (after): 먹다 → 먹은 후에, 끝나다 → 끝난 후에, 하다 → 한 후에. The ㄴ marks the action as finished. 다음에 can replace 후에 with the same meaning, and with a noun you say N 후에: 수업 후에, after class.
- 일 끝난 후에 만나자.Let's meet after work.
- 영화 본 후에 뭐 할래?What do you want to do after the movie?
- 샤워한 후에 전화할게.I'll call you after I shower.
Why it hits
In Korean dramas, nothing serious happens on an empty stomach. When the son announces he is quitting his job or the daughter brings home the wrong boyfriend, a parent says 밥 먹은 후에 얘기하자, and everyone eats in heavy silence. Food first, fight later is practically a rule of the genre.
